    What is SEISEN-RYOU?

“SEISEN-RYOU” was originally established in 1938 as a Christian leadership training center, built by Dr. Paul Rusch, an American who worked to cultivate the land and was affectionately called the “Father of Kiyosato” by the local farmers. Later, a model village center construction project began, using Seisenryo as a base, and the Kiyosato Educational Experiment Project (KEEP) was established, named after the acronym of this initiative. After World War II, the KEEP Association started activities focusing on increasing food production in highland areas, improving rural health, and fostering hope in youth. They began breeding Jersey cows on the farm, and with support from citizens in the United States and Canada, built facilities such as the Highland Experimental Farm, Kiyosato St. Andrew’s Church, St. Luke’s Clinic, and St. John’s Nursery School. Today, SEISEN-RYOU has become a center for environmental education in Japan, emphasizing nature conservation, environmental protection, and leadership training. The name “SEISEN-RYOU” combines “Kiyosato” and the former “Oizumi Village” as the extensive grounds span both areas.
